Tea Horse Road & Glacier Geology Study Tour

The Journey

Measure history with footsteps, explore geology with your eyes. This 6-day study tour takes education-focused families from Lijiang's ancient Naxi courtyards to the Tibetan plateau of Shangri-La. Your children won't just see China —they'll understand it. Expert mentors bring geology, heritage, and philosophy to life at every stop.

DAY1

Lijiang —Naxi Courtyard & Ancient Music

Arrive at Lijiang Airport. Check into a traditional Naxi courtyard hotel in the heart of the Old Town. Evening: attend a private performance of Naxi Ancient Music —melodies played on instruments over 1,000 years old, a living echo of the Silk Road era. Feel the charm of Dongba culture from the very first night.

DAY2

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain & Dongba Paper

Morning: ascend to Glacier Park on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Your naturalist mentor explains karst landforms and glacier formation —far more meaningful than just riding the cable car. Afternoon: Blue Moon Valley's impossibly turquoise lakes. Then: a Dongba paper making workshop with a heritage master. Write your name in "living pictographs" —the world's last hieroglyphic script.

DAY3

Tiger Leaping Gorge & Road to Shangri-La

Drive along the Yangtze River's First Bend, then hike the middle section of Tiger Leaping Gorge —one of the world's deepest canyons. Feel the Jinsha River roar below. Continue to Shangri-La and stroll through Dukezong Ancient Town at sunset, the old Tea Horse Road staging post with prayer flags fluttering in the wind.

DAY4

Pudacuo National Park & Tibetan Home

Morning: Pudacuo National Park —alpine lakes, primeval forests, and rare high-altitude flora. Your guide leads a plant identification walk. Look for black-necked cranes. Afternoon: visit a Tibetan family's home. Make butter tea, prepare tsampa (roasted barley flour), and learn about nomadic plateau life from the people who live it.

DAY5

Songzanlin Monastery & Napahai Grassland

Morning: visit the "Little Potala Palace" —Songzanlin Monastery. Attend a monk debate session and discuss Buddhist philosophy with young lamas. Afternoon: horseback riding across Napahai (Yila) Grassland with Cangshan Mountain on the horizon. Return to Lijiang in the evening.

DAY6

Shuhe Ancient Town —Leather Craft Farewell

Morning: Shuhe Ancient Town, a quieter Tea Horse Road outpost. Experience traditional Naxi leather crafting —another intangible heritage skill. Create your own hand-stitched leather souvenir. Afternoon: airport transfer. Depart with a mind full of geology, heritage, and philosophy.

FAQ

What is the altitude of Shangri-La and will I get mountain sickness?

Shangri-La is at 3,200m. We arrange 2 nights in Lijiang (2,400m) first for acclimatization. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol on Day 1-2. Mild headache is normal; we carry oxygen canisters.

Do I need to be fit for this tour?

Moderate fitness is enough. The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain visit includes unlimited cable car rides. Yak Meadow is at 3,700m but you can choose how far to walk. Baisha and Shuhe are flat, easy walks.

What will I learn in the Dongba class?

You'll learn the basics of Naxi hieroglyphics — the only living pictographic writing system in the world. Write your name, make a bookmark, and take home your Dongba paper creation.

What should I wear in Shangri-La?

Strong sun + cold nights. Bring a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen by day; a fleece jacket or light down by night (even in summer). We provide a traditional Tibetan robe for the home visit photo.

When is the best season for this route?

April-June for azalea blooms on the mountain; September-November for clear skies and golden rooftops in Shangri-La. July-August is rainy season — lush green but clouds may obscure the snow mountain.

REVIEWS

What Our Travelers Say

★★★★☆

“The Tibetan family homestay near Shangri-La was the most authentic cultural experience of our lives. We helped make butter tea, fed yaks, and listened to grandmother's stories by the fire.”

Ruby M (Australia) ★★★★☆

“My kids (10 and 13) made their own paper using the 1,000-year-old Dongba technique. They were so proud. The glacier geology lesson at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain turned our hike into a living science class.”

Zhi Hao (Singapore) ★★★★☆

“Kunming's bathhouse was a great introduction, but Lijiang stole my heart. Sitting in the ancient town after a spa treatment, looking at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain — pure magic.”

Pierre (France) ★★★★☆

“My guide knew exactly which spa treatments would help after the mountain hiking. The combination of urban luxury bath and natural wonder is a genius itinerary design.”

Sooyoung (Korea)
